yea, like higurashi, there are acts where the different things happen in the same scenario, apparently, in the same time frame (like higurashi) but it also involves witches, and a guy trying to denny them.
yea, there’s a girl called maria that acts and looks like rena. Also, rena´s hatchet shows up in about the 4th episode, I think.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni (うみねこのなく頃に). It’s in the PC and ,if I’m not mistaken, someone is translating the game (there should be some youtube videos I think). Still I’m pretty sure you’d rather watch since the game’s graphics are a bit of a let down compared to the anime.

Well basically, it’s about some people getting murdered in an island. They are all trying to find out who is the murderer and/or if it’s caused by magic.
The anime and game is split into episodes (all are in chronological order). These episodes act as extra background information at the time of the murders and even some of the events change (primarily due to Battler and Beatrice confronting each other in an alternate plane).
All I can say is at least it’s not as confusing as Higurashi.
